Elective C-sections

Pre-assessment clinic for a C-section

Preparing for your hospital admission and caesarean section is vitally important and to support this process you will need to come in to see us for a Pre-Assessment 48 hours prior to admission. You will be contacted by a member of the Midwifery team to book this appointment, unless your Obstetrician’s secretary has already booked this for you.
In Short
Maternity Pre-Assessment Clinic

Coming into hospital for an elective caesarean section delivery, as well as being exciting, can be a daunting prospect. As a leading healthcare provider we try to ensure that you are best equipped for your admission to The Portland Hospital and that you know what to expect.

What is Pre-Assessment and why is it necessary?

Pre-Assessment is a process by which a Midwife will review your Maternity Booking information, including any risk factors identified by your Obstetrician, to ensure that an individual plan is in place for your admission and caesarean delivery. It also helps to confirm that you are fit for surgery and provides an opportunity to have routine tests completed prior to admission. In addition to the standard Pre-Assessment checks and tests, the Portland Hospital has a policy to screen for Covid-19 prior to admission to hospital.

Your Pre-Assessment appointment provides you with time to discuss your planned admission and caesarean delivery and allows you to ask any questions that you may still have.

Who will carry out the Pre-Assessment and what will happen?

A Portland Hospital Midwife will perform the Pre-Assessment. She will confirm your admission date and time and the time of your caesarean delivery. She will perform essential blood tests required prior to surgery and swabs required for your delivery (MRSA and Covid-19). You will be provided with information leaflets to take home, or an email with links to electronic versions, to help you to be prepared and fully informed of what to expect on the day, and also how to optimise your health and healing following a caesarean section. We are also offering a Covid-19 Lateral Flow test for birth partners prior to an elective admission. Please bring your birth partner to your pre-assessment, both of you will need to register at reception on arrival.

CONTACT US on 0207 390 6344 Option 1 if you know your Caesarean Section date and wish to book your Pre-Assessment, or if you have any questions. Alternatively you will receive a call from us within a week of your scheduled admission to book the Pre-Assessment.

To enable us to keep the Antenatal clinic running to schedule for all patients, we kindly ask that if you are unable to make your appointment within 15 minutes of the scheduled time, please call ahead to discuss your appointment on the number above, as we may need to reschedule due to the given time.
