ADMISSIONS TEAM
Our Admissions team are here to provide you with support during this time. We are able to assist with your insurance coverage and self-pay quotations regarding any planned admissions.WHAT IS THE NEONATAL UNIT
The Neonatal Unit at The Portland Hospital provides facilities to support babies who deliver from 28 weeks gestation onwards. Care is provided either in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) or in the Special Care Unit (SCBU) and Transitional Care in the room with parents (TC) depending on baby’s health and development needs.
The Neonatal Unit combines advanced technology and trained health care professionals to provide specialist care for our tiniest patients. Giving birth to a sick or premature baby can be quite unexpected for any parent. Unfamiliar sights, sounds, and equipment in the Neonatal Unit can be overwhelming and the nurses are there to support and guide parents through this difficult time as well as provide excellent, evidence-based care.
INSURED PATIENTS
Patients holding family medical insurance policies may find that their baby’s stay in the neonatal unit is covered by their insurance. Please ensure you liaise with your insurance company as soon as possible to include your baby’s care on your policy. Our admissions staff are available to discuss any concerns and are happy to provide individual assistance in completing your insurance coverage.
SELF PAY PATIENTS
*NICU, HDU, SCBU is included within our self-funding maternity packages for the first 3 nights, this excludes any Transitional care or planned admissions into NICU*
If you are worried about the cost of neonatal care then we can arrange for your baby to be transferred into a NHS neonatal unit. All babies born in the UK requiring neonatal care are allocated a cot via the NHS neonatal care bed management system. This system will confirm the closest NHS neonatal care facility which has the capacity and skills to care for your baby, this process may take a day or so dependent on availability.
Please liaise with your lead nurse immediately should you wish a transfer to be organised.
