18/20 weeks

Fetal development - 18 - 20 weeks

In Short

Week 18
By now your babies (on average) are around 15 cm (or around the size of a big avacado) long – and around 240g in weight. Your baby now has fingerprints! Although the eyelids are still shut, the eyeballs can move from side to side. They are looking more and more in proportion.

Week 19
Babies (on average) are now around 16.4 cm long (like a mango!) and weighing around 300g. Your baby’s sense of sight, smell, touch, sound and taste are starting to develop. Areas of hard bone continue to develop. Babies’ legs are now longer than their arms.

Week 20
Babies (on average) are now around 26cm long (10 inches) and around 360grams. Your baby’s skin is now covered in a fine downy hair called lanugo hair. The skin is being covered in a white waxy coating called “Vernix caseosa” which forms a protective coating. Babies are now regularly swallowing amniotic fluid, their kidneys are processing the fluid, and they will be urinating.
