Post-natal 5 - Unwell baby

Checklist for Unwell Baby

Most babies are healthy. Occasionally, some babies may become unwell. You know your baby best, so if you are concerned contact for help sooner rather than later.
In Short

The following checklist of symptoms is a guide for when to seek medical attention for your baby by contacting your midwife, GP or attending A&E if you are really worried.

High pitched or weak cry

Persistent crying

Much less responsive or floppy

Pale all over

Makes a noise with each breath

Not interested in feeding

Lethargic or less active

Passes much less urine

Vomits green fluid

Persistent diarrhoea and/or vomiting

High fever or sweating

Blood in stools

Dehydrated – baby’s mouth dry, eyes are sunken and soft spot on head is sunken.

Please seek URGENT medical attention by dialling 999 if your baby:

  • Stops breathing or goes blue
  • Is unresponsive and shows no awarenessof what is going on
  • Has glazed eyes and does not focus onanything
  • Cannot be woken
  • Has a fit
  • Has a rash that does not disappear under pressure.
