Post-natal 1 - Looking after Mum

Bowels

Constipation is very common after childbirth. A high fibre diet is important including fresh fruit and vegetables and drinking plenty of fluids can help to prevent constipation. If this is not enough, please see your GP for medications that might help to soften the stool.
In Short
Constipation can be made worse by haemorrhoids (piles). These are very common in women who have just had a baby. Piles can be managed by avoiding constipation, using good hygiene, preparatory creams and stool softeners. Pain relief medication can help.

Occasionally some women have difficulty getting to the toilet in time and may have an accident. If this happens on multiple occasions you should also seek help.
