Post-natal 4 - Practicalities

Discharge from Midwifery Care

Normally the midwife will discharge you and your baby when your baby is about 10-14 days old.
In Short
At the last visit you may like further information on any or all of the following: feeding the baby, blood loss, sexual activity and contraception, care of the umbilical cord and follow up appointments for you or the baby.

The health visitor will visit you a few days after discharge, and will advise you on further follow up of your baby’s progress and your baby’s immunisation programme. If she has not contacted you within a week you should inform your GP surgery.

Even if the midwife is no longer visiting you, you are still able to contact her and seek her advice or a further visit up until your baby is 28 days old. If you have any serious concerns about your health between discharge and 28 days post-delivery you can contact maternity out of hours or attend maternity triage. If you or your baby are unwell after this, you should contact your GP or/and your local health visitor.
