11/13 weeks

Fetal development - 11-13 weeks

In Short

Week 11
Your baby is now about the size of a lime – around 5.4cm in length and 14g. They may move in response to gentle pressure on your abdomen. Primitive reflexes are starting to develop. The eyes and ears are still moving into their final positions and the eyelids are still fused tightly together. The facial features are still developing.

Week 12
Your baby will now be around 7.4cm in length and weigh around 23g – around the size of a lemon. Your baby’s head is still large in proportion to his body. Their mouth, stomach and intestines are now linked. Your baby’s heart is now fully functional and the heart rate is starting to slow down. Their chest wall is forming and your baby will start making little breathing movements – as well as possible hiccups and swallowing. Your egg yolk is empty and the placenta will be taking over the role of nourishment.

Week 13
Your baby’s body is starting to look more in proportion with the head. The hands and feet are no longer webbed and the bones inside are starting to form. They are likely to be a little under 9cm in length and around 43g – around the size of a good sized orange!
